Visiocue at Charles de Gaulle Airport: Enhancing Efficiency with AI

At Visiocue, we are dedicated to revolutionising airport operations through advanced AI solutions. Our ongoing proof of concept (PoC) at Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), showcases our innovative approach to solving a critical issue: the detection and management of non-conveyable luggage.

The Problem:

Non-conveyable luggage refers to items that do not meet the International Air Transport Association (IATA) standards for size and shape. These include oversized sports equipment, baby carriages, or even trekking backpacks with protruding straps for example. Such luggage can cause significant disruptions in airport baggage systems, particularly affecting Nerak elevators, which require extensive maintenance if damaged by non-conveyables. This leads to costly delays and penalties, tarnishing the airport’s reputation and passenger experience.

Our Solution:

In partnership with Beumer Group, Visiocue has developed an AI-driven system that accurately detects non-conveyable luggage before it enters the baggage handling system. Using advanced imaging technology, our solution identifies problematic items, such as spherical luggage and backpacks with loose straps, and signals operators to divert these items for manual handling. This preemptive measure reduces the risk of system damage and improves overall baggage processing efficiency.

Implementation at CDG:

Our pilot project at CDG focuses on high-traffic areas such as Terminal 3. Cameras are strategically placed after the check-in area and before the luggage induction phase to capture detailed images of each item. This data is analysed in real-time by our AI algorithms, ensuring that non-conveyable luggage is identified and diverted promptly. By preventing these items from entering the automated system, we significantly reduce maintenance interventions and enhance baggage flow.

Impact and Future Prospects:

The initial results of our PoC at CDG are promising, showing a marked decrease in system disruptions and improved luggage handling efficiency. Our goal is to scale this solution ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where flawless baggage handling will be critical.
